Prepare yourself to be amazed!

Prepare yourself to be amazed, for I, yes even I, have in fact knitted something. BE IT KNOWN: that the person formerly known as Not-Quite-A-Real-Woman-Because-She-Can't-Knit (snicker, snicker) has decided that though living vicariously through the knitting genius of others did in fact afford some benefit, the loss of self respect and perpetual whining got too tiresome and has, therefore, met its Waterloo.
So, without further ado, introducing my combination dish cloth/wash cloth. :-)
You might (or then again might not) remember that I couldn't purl, so I endeavored to learn this wily stitch through a book that I've had for about a decade. I *do not* learn well through books (that is such an understatement) but I can't watch YouTube videos and none of my knitting friends would consent to fly here and tutor me so I was forced to man up (so to speak) and just learn it already!

However, *this next part is spoken in a small hushed voice*, I'm afraid that I didn't do it right. The opposite side is a mirror image of this side, can that be right? I tried to call a friend this morning to ask her, but naturally people can't be at home when I have momentous and Earth shattering questions about knitted dish cloths. What I thought I was doing was knitting 2 rows and then purling 2 rows, but the rows that look knitted on this side appear to be purled on the opposite side and the purled rows here look knitted back there, so I'm figuring my jubilation is in vain.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated. :-)

  1. Hi, this is HannahH from the sewing academy *waves* I just wanted to comment and say how much I love your blog, and also to let you know that I do believe you are doing your knitting and purling correctly - the back of a knit looks like a purl and the back of the purl is supposed to look like a knit. Congrats on your new knitting skills !

  4. Go you! I never did get the hang of knitting, although all my knitting friends tell me it's easy. Easy for them to say, they can knit! I could crochet once, but not sure I remember how anymore. Your wash cloth looks lovely. All you need to work on now is blocking...LOL :P

  5. Yes, you have done it right! Congratulations :)

Now...you can try a scarf! It is just a little longer than a washcloth but you can use the same stitch.

    Blessings,

    Maria

  6. Awesome! I am one of those people who can't get her head around the seemingly impossible task of knitting. I am in awe of people who knit, crochet and especially, tat lace.

I cannot comprehend how one does these things, it seems too complicated and does not compute in my brain.

It's great that you did this, and I imagine, once you start it's all gravy from here on as far as what you can do next! Bravo!

  7. Robyn, Maria & Robin thanks for the kind words! I can tat actually, albeit only needle tatting and not shuttle tatting, shuttle tatting is on my list of things that I want to master along with about 400 other things, lol.

  8. Like others have said, you did it right! Purling is simply one half of knitting, the smooth half, so when you purl and knit back and forth repeatedly you get one side all smooth and one side all ribbed. I'm not sure that makes sense, as it's taken me years to pretty much understand knitting inside-out! Keep it up! Your dish/wash cloth has really even stitches, so well done :D

  9. I just stumbled across your blog and was so thankful to know that there are people out there like me. You give voice to the same things I have gotten frustrated with. I want to master knitting the sock, but I can't seem to wrap my mind around doing the heel and therefore have two socks that go as far as the heel and stop. Ankle warmers -- do I hear a new trend?

I have gone back to knitting a few washcloths to experience a sense of accomplishment!

  10. Well, I guess I don't need to tell you if you are right or wrong on the knitting as you have gotten lots of answers already, but congrats on the knitting progress! The dishcloth/washcloth looks great! Yes, it is supposed to be opposite like that, so you are doing a great job!
Can't wait to see what else you knit up!
    Love,
    Fiddlin Girl
