A haircut gone awry

I got a haircut today, my first honest-to-goodness professional haircut in a long time. I have had long hair for decades, I *like* long hair. But, what started as a homegrown "just trim the ends off" spun wildly out of control, when I saw it I felt like throwing up. :-) So, first thing this morning I called and got an appointment to try to fix the damage. The result is this.

It barely skims my shoulders and I feel somewhat like a shorn sheep. Mr. G loves it and said all kinds of nice things about it but I feel so.....so.......modern. So like this isn't me. I needed the catharsis of a blog post, the need to throw it out into cyberspace to see what the consensus is.

  1. The haircut is nice but i get what you mean. I have waist length hair and if it got cut off, I'd feel awful.

  2. I too, prefer long hair, and when I've gotten my hair cut short (intentionally or not), I have also felt a wee bit strange. But, I've usually liked the results once I got used to it.

I think your hair looks great! Sure it's a departure from what you're accustomed to, but it really does look very nice. Modern or not, it suits you. :)

  3. You look beautiful. Hair is so personal so when changes are made it's personal too. Again it looks lovely. So believe Mr G and enjoy the cut.

  4. I think you look absolutely lovely! I too have had a recent hair drama and can feel your pain :0) when you go in with one thing in mind and walk out with a totally different thing it can be very upsetting!
Although it isnt what you had invisioned it really does look wonderful!

  5. Well, I really like it, but I can understand if it doesn't feel like you. Could it be you just need a little bit of time to get used to it? I do think it is very flattering!

  6. OHMYGOSH I *LOVE* it!

You look very vintage/retro. And you have gorgeous eyes! It frames your lovely face so prettily. . .now we need to get you into 1930s/40's fashions as I think they would look adorable with your new 'do. :) Actually the first thing I thought when I saw the picture is "that is one hot mama!" :P No wonder Mr. G likes it. . .you look fantastic!

  7. Yes, modern, but not bad! No one else will think anything of it :). Give it a few days. I think it makes you look younger!

  8. Paris, it doesn't matter what any of us think. Your husband likes it - that's a big plus.
Give yourself a chance to get used to it. It WILL grow out again if you decide that's what you prefer.

  10. Wow, thanks, your comments really made me feel better. I was feeling pretty unsure of myself, but your compliments made my day! Retro, huh? It never even crossed my mind. I'm feeling a new historical dressing era coming on, lol. :-)

  11. Nooooo....! Don't leave us!! Stay here in the 1860's!!!!!
    (a little time-travel humor!)

  12. Ken, I like the 1860s but fashionwise I look terrible in it. :-( The 1830s suit me more but don't worry, I'm not selling my WBTS garb any time soon.

  13. I too believe you are beautiful even with short hair! If I had my hair cut right now I too would be saying why did I do that! But after a while would love it! Yes 1930's and 40's styles would be beautiful with your new do! :)

  14. I think you look great. You look like you're a teenager or maybe early twenties. Are you sure you have nine children? LOL!
I'm sure it will grow on you, and if Mr. G. likes it, then that's really all that matters :)

  15. I think you look amazing, trendy yes, but simply amazing.

  16. Wow! Is that your natural color? It's so vibrant! I know so many people who dye to try and get close, and it doesn't come out nearly as well. I love the cut, but remember -- hair grows, so if it's a little shorter than you like, just wait a couple weeks! And cut hair grows faster than long anyway.

  17. Jenny, no it's not natural, well, it is "natural" because it's henna and black walnut dyes but it isn't my real color. I have brown hair with red highlights and a blond streak. I was born with the blond streak and though the doctor told my Mom when I was a newborn that it would fade, it never did. Another gal told me that the blond would be the first thing to go gray and she was right. The henna/black walnut makes the grey a lot brighter than the blond ever was when I was young. I do like it but it's really, ah, loud. :D

  18. Hair today, gone tomorrow! We think it suits your face and looks good. If your husband likes it and you feel good about it, who cares what others think? Hair grows back.

  19. I think you look lovely! Your hair will grow back. I know what you mean. I only get my hair cut about every ten years..when I don't think I can stand it anymore, even though I know I will immediately regret doing so. And I still cut it and immediately regret it.

  20. Oh great, another pretty girl complaining about how she looks. :)

I've always said you and I are are the best looking in the family, not to mention the smartest.

  21. You look lovely. And like the others said, if Mr. G is raving about it, then what the rest of us think doesn't matter. But I can understand where you are coming from, my hair is my security blanket, and when it is short, I look even fatter:P, so long it stays.

I must ask though, what do you use on your face? You look so young and your complexion is fabulous.

Enjoy your new look, and just think, no more tangles, getting stuck in the car door or window, or being pulled out by little hands as easily :)

  22. Gee, I should get radical haircuts more often, the comments left really gave me a needed self esteem boost. :-) I have been feeling very dumpy and unattractive for the last little while and I am *so* glad that I got the botched haircut so that I could end up with this new look!
Tiff, I wore makeup in high school but have not really used it since I've been married. Katie recently asked if she could wear it occasionally so I bought some for her and me. I'm wearing it in the picture: light foundation, eye shadow, mascara and lipstick. I don't mind makeup that makes me look like a better me, but I dislike makeup that makes me look like I wandered out of the red light district. I do think that the makeup is an improvement and I like the confidence boost that it gives. Besides, you are a lovely woman, don't sell yourself short. :-)

  23. Hey! I take objection to Anonymous' (aka Brother Bill) comment that you and he are the best looking ones in the family! :P Seriously, the haircut looks wonderful! Feeling "dumpy and unattractive" means you need a change. You look at least 10 years younger, and there's nothing wrong with a little makeup and hairdo to enhance what God gave you. You look mah-v'lus little sister.

  24. Robyn, thanks! And, as you know, tact has never been one of Bill's stronger traits. :-D I agree, I did need a change, I'm really enjoying the new look, it is one of the best things to happen to me in a long while. To celebrate I've been on a clothes buying spree, all things cute and fitted. Ch-ch-ch-changes....
