Ode On A Potato Masher

Ode On A Potato Masher

Lovely potato masher, though art sweet and fair
Thy graceful handle with paint nicked and chipped
Thou makest my potatoes as light as air
And deliverest turnips all buttered and whipped
Praise the humble tool
Thou art my kitchen jewel

Electric beaters, family feeders, all sleek and new
Mash they none better, yea but faster
Rendered thee obsolete, no longer cool
But in my humble kitchen thou art master
A salute to vintage tools, all tried and true
“Made in China” doth pale in comparison to you

An "ode" is supposed to have 3 stanzas but my muse left me high and dry and I struggled just to get the 2nd stanza written. But howsoever that may be, I'm sure than the spontaneous breaking into song or poetry upon seeing a beloved kitchen appliance cannot be a foreign occurrence to my dear readers. :-)

  2. Excellent and witty poetry, dear Mrs. G!

We have a potato masher too though the handle is neither nicked or chipped. We so much prefer it to the electric beaters (which I do keep on hand, for egg whites) since the electric beaters have a tendency to make syrupy and slimy mashed potatoes. David is the crown potato masher though - HE wields it like a king his scepter!

  3. LOL! That's such a cute little poem! And you're right -- I break into spontaneous song at the sight of a beloved kitchen appliance from time to time too. :)

  5. Cute!

Saturday when DD was over to make laundry detergent, I was shredding the Fels Naptha with my cheese grater. She asked how long I had had it, as she was sure that it had been a LONG time and that she never sees any like it. Indeed, it has been with us near 27 years now...

    Sweet little cheese grater. ;)

  6. I have had the same empty wine bottle as my potato masher / refried bean masher / rolling pin for eight years. Works for me!
